Designing a Mechanical Ventilator to aid respiratory support and enable IOT enabled control of flow pressure and volume. This project was a collaboration between Studio Carbon and reSPIRE to aid healthcare systems during the times of the 2020 Pandemic.

A breath of life

2020 marked a year, where the pandemic, COVID-19 took all of us by surprise. With all of us doing our part to better the situation, this project of designing a Mechanical Ventilator in collaboration with reSPIRE was Studio Carbon's part in the bigger picture. The urgent nature of the project led to a record execution of the entire product, from its early ideations, styling, CMF to final prototypes.

Cloud intelligence

The IOT nature of the device allows for control over the cloud aiding for seamless and empowering control for caretakers at Hospital and homes alike. Flow variables such as pressure and volume can be adjusted and monitored over the cloud. The device is also capable of adjusting to patient's behavioral data such as FIO2 levels. The smart and complex operational advantages are seamlessly layered beneath a simple and easy to use interface, making it an accessible device for healthcare workers and caretakers at home.

One of a kind

The styling of the Mechanical Ventilator is organic in comparison to the various rigid and cuboidal ventilators seen in the market, making it one of a kind. The infusion of styling elements never before seen in the segment, make it a styling statement to reckon with, all the while also being functionally and ergonomically sound.

Meticulously detailed

The internal product architecture of the ventilator is designed to the last detail, so that the product not only looks good, but functions well too.

Functional Form

The raised and angled fascia allow for ergonomic access of the interface. The Mid raise cover allows for tight secure of the Ambu bag which undergoes repeated Volumetric deformation while being compressed in cycles. The Grill in the front fascia allows for cool air to be sucked in. The rear set fans allow for continual air circulation in the system, keeping the motors and PCB temperatures at optimum temperature for extended operation of the device. The bottom recesses allow for the product to be handled and moved about. The power and sensor input ports are elegantly placed at the rear carved pocket for easy access, while also not being visually clumsy. The dual fan system at the rear, with its vertical format and angled placement makes for an interesting form transition from the front, imbuing a sense of styling that is unique and unseen in this segment of the medical industry.
